Power Cables Technical Guide
1. Introduction
This guide provides a technical overview of common mains plugs and IEC connectors used worldwide. It covers safety standards, wiring, fusing, and application guidance to support professional users when selecting compatible and compliant power leads for IT, AV, and electrical equipment.
2. Mains Plug Types
| Region | Plug Type | Voltage / Frequency | Typical Fuse | Standards / Approvals | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| UK Mains | BS1363 | 230V / 50Hz | 3A, 5A, or 13A (in plug) | BS1363 / ASTA | Always fused; 3-core cable (L, N, E). Use 13A for 1.25 mm², 5A for 0.75 mm². |
| Euro Mains | CEE 7/7 (Schuko) | 230V / 50Hz | Unfused | EN 50075 / VDE | Common in EU. Round pins with side earth contacts. |
| US Mains | NEMA 5-15P | 120V / 60Hz | Unfused | UL 817 / CSA C22.2 | Polarized blades; use with AWG 18–14 wire depending on load. |
| Swiss Mains | SEV 1011 (Type J) | 230V / 50Hz | Unfused | SEV / Electrosuisse | 3-pin recessed design for safety. |
| Danish Mains | Type K | 230V / 50Hz | Unfused | DS 107-2-D1 | Similar to Schuko but with earth pin. |
| South African Mains | SANS 164-1 (Type M) | 230V / 50Hz | Unfused | SABS | Large round pins; suitable for higher current draw. |
| Chinese Mains | GB 2099 (Type I) | 220V / 50Hz | Unfused | CCC | Similar to Australian pattern but rotated pins. |
3. IEC Connector Types
| Connector | Rated Current / Voltage | Cable Wire Gauge | Typical Use | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IEC C13 (Socket) / C14 (Plug) | 10A / 250V | 0.75 – 1.0 mm² (H05VV-F 3G) | PCs, monitors, IT equipment | Most common computer lead (kettle-style). |
| IEC C5 (Socket) / C6 (Plug) | 2.5A / 250V | 0.75 mm² | Laptop PSUs, small appliances | “Mickey Mouse” connector; no earth continuity beyond earth pin. |
| IEC C7 (Socket) / C8 (Plug) | 2.5A / 250V | 0.75 mm² | Audio/visual, small electronics | “Figure-8” connector; double-insulated devices only. |
| IEC C15 (Socket) / C16 (Plug) | 10A / 250V | 1.0 mm² (H05RR-F or H05VV-F) | Hot appliances (e.g. kettles) | Heat-resistant version of C13 (120 °C rated). |
| IEC C19 (Socket) / C20 (Plug) | 16A / 250V | 1.5 mm² | Servers, PDUs, industrial IT | For higher-current rack power. |
| 16A Commando (IEC 60309 Blue) | 16A / 230V | 1.5 – 2.5 mm² | Industrial/single-phase | Locking, splash-proof connector (IP44 / IP67). |
| 32A Commando (IEC 60309 Blue) | 32A / 230V | 4.0 mm² | Heavy-duty / 3 kW+ equipment | Industrial and outdoor use; ensure matching socket rating. |
4. Cable Selection Guidelines
| Cable Length | Recommended Wire Size (230V) | Max Load (Approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 2 m | 0.75 mm² | 6 A |
| 2 – 5 m | 1.0 mm² | 10 A |
| 5 – 10 m | 1.5 mm² | 13 A |
| Over 10 m | 2.5 mm² | 16 A+ |
Notes:
-
For 120 V operation, increase wire gauge (lower AWG) for equivalent power rating.
-
Always verify local current limits and temperature ratings.
5. Fusing and Protection
-
UK plugs must contain a BS1362 cartridge fuse (3A, 5A, or 13A).
-
Other regions rely on circuit breakers or equipment fuses.
-
Use slow-blow fuses for inductive loads (motors, transformers).
-
Ensure cable rating ≥ fuse rating.
6. Safety & Compliance
-
Use cables marked with H05VV-F, H05RR-F, or SJT as per region.
-
Look for certification marks: BSI Kitemark, VDE, UL, CSA, CCC, SABS, or CE.
-
Inspect connectors for strain relief and moulded terminations.
-
Avoid coiling leads under load – may cause overheating.
-
Replace damaged cords immediately; never repair by taping.
CE Markings & Usage
On commercial products, the letters CE mean that the manufacturer or importer affirms the goods’ conformity with European health, safety, and environmental protection standards. It is not a quality indicator or a certification mark.
The UKCA marking is the product marking used for products being placed on the market in Great Britain after Brexit (England, Scotland and Wales). The UKCA marking applies to most products for which the CE marking could be used.
The CE / UKCA mark must definitely not be used on a rewireable mains plug, or domestic socket outlet. By continuation, the CE mark should not be on the plug of a moulded mains lead either. CE clearly states that it applies to products, not components. Therefore, a mains cable hard wired into a piece of equipment does not require CE marking, and whether a CE declaration of conformity is required depends upon the larger piece of equipment.
The same applies if a detachable power cord is supplied with the equipment: the RoHS guidance document states “External cables that form part of another EEE because they are sold together or marketed/shipped for use with an EEE, e.g. power cords, must meet the material restrictions but do not need an individual CE marking and Declaration of Conformity if they are covered by the DoC for the EEE and the EEE is CE marked.” EEE is electrical and electronic equipment.
The only environment where CE marking is required is if supplying a power cable as a piece of electrical equipment on its own, e.g. retail packed in a supermarket. For this reason, a double-ended power cable, e.g. mains plug to IEC C13 connector may have a CE mark on the non-plug end. The CE mark may also be put on the product label, bag, or carton.
*FDL is a trade supplier of network and cabling products to the IT industry. All power products are bulk packed and intended for supply with IT equipment and are, therefore considered component parts, for which CE or UKCA markings do not apply.
Fairline Distribution Ltd do not supply power leads or adaptors to be resold as a retail product and therefore they do not have CE or UKCA markings on the product. However, where possible such markings are put on the labels and packaging, so that the product may be sold on as an individual “part”.
Customers who are reselling or retailing any power lead, adaptor or component as a stand-alone product, i.e. not with a piece of CE marked equipment and feel that they require the product to carry the CE and / or UKCA markings on the label or packaging should advise our sales staff at time of purchase, so that they can ensure that the products supplied carry such markings.*
7. Quick Reference – Typical Applications
