Helpful Buying Tip

When choosing a PoE switch, check the number of ports, PoE standard, total power budget and whether the switch needs to be unmanaged, managed, desktop-mounted or rack-mounted.

Cable Management for Network Cabinets and Installations

Good cable management keeps network cabinets, comms rooms and installations easier to maintain, troubleshoot and expand.

Fairline supplies cable ties, cable management bars, cabinet accessories and installation products to help route, secure and organise copper network cabling.

Best for:

  • Tidying network cabinets
  • Reducing cable strain
  • Improving airflow and access
  • Supporting labelled patching

Copper Networking FAQs

What is copper networking?

Copper networking refers to Ethernet network infrastructure that uses copper twisted-pair cables, such as Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A and Cat7, to carry data between devices, switches, patch panels, outlets and network equipment.

What is the difference between patch cable and installation cable?

Patch cables are flexible, ready-made leads used for short connections between devices, switches, patch panels and outlets. Installation cable is used for permanent cabling runs and is usually terminated into patch panels, keystone modules or wall outlets.

Should I choose Cat5e, Cat6 or Cat6A?

Cat5e is suitable for many existing Gigabit networks. Cat6 is a practical choice for most modern office networks. Cat6A is recommended for higher-performance installations, 10 Gigabit-ready networks and better long-term future-proofing.

Do I need shielded or unshielded network cable?

Unshielded cable is suitable for many standard office environments. Shielded cable may be preferred where there is a higher risk of electrical interference, or where the installation uses shielded patch panels, modules and connectors.

Can copper network cables support PoE?

Yes. Many copper Ethernet cables can support Power over Ethernet, but the cable category, conductor quality, length, device requirements and PoE standard should all be checked before installation.

What products do I need for a complete copper network installation?

A typical installation may require network installation cable, patch panels, keystone modules or outlets, patch leads, RJ45 connectors, cable management, network tools, testers and active networking products such as switches or PoE switches.
